On 1 May 2007 the second meeting of the work group doing the translations into the Ukrainian language for the Teach-IT.net instructional method was held. The translators, taking advantage of the opportunity, were able to share the difficulties encountered during the first stage of their work, talk over a range of debatable points related to the translation of computer terminology, and also express, importantly, their positive and optimistic vision for the development of the program in Ukraine.
The experience of translating the first modules convinced them how great the gap is in the development of Ukrainian computer terminology. According to Oleh Protsak, one of the translators of the method, the situation in this field has shown little improvement since the start of the 1990s. Today one can affirm rather a negative tendency: the struggle to work out organic terminology in this field is clearly tending to the side of its Russification. So the joint efforts of the translators and editors of the Teach-IT.net method is an attempt to obtain an optimal version of the text that will be understandable and effective on the whole territory of our country. An important precondition for this is the fact that the translators of the method live in the western area of Ukraine, while the scholarly authors-adaptors of the method are in Kyiv.
The meeting was at the same time the start of the second stage of the translation (modules 5, 6, and 7 of the method), which will last to the start of June 2007. All the work on the translation and adaptation of the textbooks of the method should be completed by the end of August 2007.
